Easy Air Fryer Fried Shrimp Recipe for Crispy Perfection

These air-fryer fried shrimp are coated with seasoned flour, egg wash, and crisp panko breadcrumbs. A light coating of cooking spray helps the outside turn golden without deep-frying.

How I Keep the Coating Crisp

I always set up my flour, egg wash, and panko in a straight line before I start breading. My little trick is to press the panko firmly onto each shrimp instead of just tossing it through the crumbs. It takes a few extra seconds, but the coating stays on and comes out much crispier in the air fryer.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined, tails optional
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • nonstick cooking spray or oil mister

How to Make Crispy Air-Fryer Shrimp

  1. Dry the shrimp. Pat the peeled and deveined shrimp thoroughly dry with paper towels.
  2. Prepare the flour. Combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and half the salt in a shallow bowl or food-safe bag.
  3. Prepare the egg wash. Whisk the eggs and water in a second bowl.
  4. Prepare the panko. Combine panko, the remaining salt, and black pepper in a third shallow dish.
  5. Bread. Coat each shrimp in flour and shake off the excess. Dip in egg, then press firmly into the panko.
  6. Preheat. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Lightly spray both sides of the breaded shrimp.
  7. Cook in batches. Arrange in a single layer without touching. Air fry for 7 to 9 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and the shrimp reach 145°F (63°C).

Tips for a Crisp Coating

  • Dry shrimp prevent the flour coating from becoming gummy.
  • Shake off excess flour before using the egg wash.
  • Press panko onto the shrimp instead of simply rolling them in crumbs.
  • Oil only the surface lightly; heavy spraying can make the coating wet.
  • Do not stack or crowd the basket.

Serving Ideas

Serve with lemon wedges, cocktail sauce, remoulade, or a spicy yogurt dip. Add the shrimp to tacos, salads, or rice bowls.

Serve It Two Ways

For a lighter plate, add the shrimp to Greek quinoa salad with feta. For an air-fryer seafood menu, compare the breaded method with this lemon-garlic salmon.

Storage and Reheating

Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours and use within 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3 to 5 minutes. Microwaving softens the coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen shrimp?

Yes, but thaw completely and dry very well before breading.

Why did the breading fall off?

The shrimp may have been wet, excess flour may not have been removed, or the panko was not pressed firmly enough.

Can I prepare them ahead?

Bread the shrimp and refrigerate them on a tray for up to 2 hours before cooking. Cook immediately after removing them from the refrigerator.

  1. First, prepare your seasoned flour. Take 1 cup of all-purpose flour and add it straight to a gallon-sized zip-top bag. To this, add 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of paprika, and ½ teaspoon of onion powder. Seal the bag and give it just a little shake to combine.
  2. Next, prepare your egg wash. In a bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs and 2 tablespoons of water until it looks really good and evenly combined.
  3. Now, prepare your panko coating. In a separate shallow dish, add 2 cups of panko breadcrumbs. To the panko, add 1 teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of black pepper. Give this a little toss with your hands until everything is properly mixed in there.
  4. Set up your assembly station. You’ll want your seasoned flour (with the shrimp), the egg mix, and the panko in a line. Also, have a rimmed baking tray off to the side to hold your breaded shrimp.
  5. Take your peeled and deveined shrimp and add it straight to the seasoned flour mix in the zip-top bag. Give it a really good toss in there to coat.
  6. Now, take a flour-coated shrimp, dip it into the egg and water mix.
  7. After the egg wash, drop the shrimp into the panko. Sort of press it in there to make sure it gets really good and adhered. Turn it and be as generous as you can, getting the panko coating adhered to the shrimp. The more panko you can get to stick, the crispier your shrimp are going to be.
  8. Transfer the breaded shrimp over to your rimmed baking tray.
  9. Once all your shrimp are breaded, take your cooking spray and liberally spray the shrimp really good on the first side. Then, flip each shrimp and spray it liberally on the second side.
  10. Add the shrimp to the air fryer in just one layer at a time. You can probably fit about nine shrimp in one batch.
  11. Cook the shrimp at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 6 to 8 minutes.

Press the panko firmly onto the shrimp and arrange them in a single layer. Cook shrimp until opaque and 145°F/63°C. Serve right away for the crispest coating; refrigerate leftovers for up to 2 days.
