Ingredients

Ingredients for Sheppard's Pie

  • Olive oil
  • Minced lamb
  • Onion
  • Carrot
  • Garlic
  • Tomato puree
  • Red wine
  • Time
  • Rosemary
  • Chicken stock
  • Potatoes
  • Egg yolks
  • Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. A little bit of colour on the mince, and it gets rid of that unwanted fat. Nothing worse than a greasy Sheppard’s Pie. Seasoned. Great.
  2. Once the vegetables are grated in there, they disintegrate and almost puree, adding great flavour, and that’s the secret behind a really good Sheppard’s Pie. It’s all in the mince.
  3. Mixing mince with grated vegetables and seasoning

  4. What’s the sauce? Tomato puree. Red wine. Time. Rosemary. Right, now the red wines are evaporated. Chicken stock in. I cook it out for three or four minutes. No more than that.
  5. Potatoes. Mash. Season. Egg yolks. Now, the secret ingredient, Parmesan cheese. It’s quite generous for the Parmesan because that’s what gets it really nice and golden brown.
  6. Now, deserve to sit on top of my mince. Good old fashioned tip. Just keep my mouth happy. For the top.
  7. 18 to 20 minutes in the oven.

Easy Authentic Sheppard’s Pie Recipe with Crispy Parmesan Topping

Discover a true British classic with this easy and authentic Sheppard’s Pie recipe. This hearty dish features succulent minced lamb and finely grated vegetables, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and a generous crispy Parmesan topping, creating an absolutely delicious and comforting family meal.

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 500g (1.1 lbs) minced lamb
  • 1 large onion, finely grated
  • 1 large carrot, finely grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 100ml (approx. 1/2 cup) red wine
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 300ml (approx. 1 1/4 cups) chicken stock
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 900g (2 lbs) potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 100g (approx. 1 cup) Parmesan cheese, grated
  1. 1 Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Heat olive oil in a large, oven-safe pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the minced lamb and brown evenly, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until it has a nice colour and any unwanted fat is rendered. Drain excess fat from the pan. Season the lamb generously with salt and pepper.
  2. 2 Add the finely grated onion, carrot, and minced garlic to the browned lamb. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables have softened and almost disintegrated into a puree, about 8-10 minutes. This is a key secret for adding great flavour to the mince.
  3. 3 Stir in the tomato puree, red wine, dried thyme, and dried rosemary. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the red wine has almost completely evaporated. Pour in the chicken stock and continue to simmer for 3-4 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
  4. 4 While the mince is simmering, boil the peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot of salted water until they are very tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the potatoes well and return them to the hot pot. Mash until smooth.
  5. 5 Stir the egg yolks into the mashed potatoes. Now, add a generous amount of grated Parmesan cheese into the mash; this is the secret ingredient that helps the topping become really nice and golden brown. Season the potato mash with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. 6 Transfer the lamb mixture to an oven-safe pie dish or casserole if not using an oven-safe skillet. Carefully spoon or pipe the mashed potato mixture evenly over the lamb filling, ensuring it covers the entire surface. You can use a fork to create ridges on the potato topping for a more rustic look and extra crispiness.
  7. 7 Place the assembled Sheppard’s Pie in the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the crispy Parmesan topping is golden brown and bubbling. Allow to rest for a few minutes before serving.
