Why You’ll Love This

This is one of my favorite oven roasted chicken recipes of all time. If you’re also a fan of delicious poultry, you might enjoy our easy crispy air fryer fried chicken recipe. I find using these parts of the chicken a lot more forgiving in the oven than using chicken breasts, which can tend to dry out, but you can use it if you like, of course. It’s so easy and takes no time to prepare if you don’t count the marinade in time.
Ingredients

- 1 tbsp of light soy sauce
- 1 tbsp of oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp of dark soy sauce (You can also use kiccha maymes or sweet soy sauce)
- a tablespoon of honey
- 2 tbsp of brown sugar
- a teaspoon of Chinese five spice powder
- half a teaspoon of white pepper
- one tbsp of blended ginger and garlic paste (basically equal amounts of garlic to ginger, so about 2 cloves of garlic, 2 about an inch of ginger)
- red food coloring (totally optional)
- about 300 grams of boneless chicken legs (You can also use chicken thighs)
Instructions

- First, let’s prepare the marinade for the chicken. I’m using a bowl here. You can also use a ziploc bag, add 1 tbsp of light soy sauce, 1 tbsp of oyster sauce, 1 tbsp of dark soy sauce. You can also use kiccha maymes or sweet soy sauce, and for the sticky and sweet in the Char Siu, we are adding a tablespoon of honey. As well as 2 tbsp of brown sugar. To that, we’re adding a teaspoon of Chinese five spice powder, and half a teaspoon of white pepper. This is one tbsp of blended ginger and garlic paste, it’s basically equal amounts of garlic to ginger, so about 2 cloves of garlic, 2 about an inch of ginger. For more easy and quick weeknight dinners, try our easy garlic butter steak bites recipe. If you buy Char Siu from the shops, it has this characteristic attractive red color, so I’m also adding red food coloring to mine, but this is totally optional, okay? I usually do not add the extra food coloring to this.
- Anyway, give all of that a nice mix.
- And then we’re ready to add our chicken. I have about 300 grams of boneless chicken legs here. You can also use chicken thighs.
- Let the marinade all over the chicken and massage it in, and you want to make sure that the chicken is submerged in the marinade.
- And then we leave these to marinade in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or overnight would be the best.
- Okay, and now we’re ready to roast it. Prepare your pan first.
- Now I highly recommend that whatever pan you use to line it with aluminum foil.
- Then pop this in a preheated oven of 200 degrees celsius for about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile, don’t throw away the leftover marinade.
- We are going to be adding all of this to a saucepan and heat it up over low heat.
- Get it all nice and bubbly and thick like this.
- Anyway, about 20 minutes later, and a viola, our trust-use chicken is done.
Cooking Tips
I find using these parts of the chicken a lot more forgiving in the oven than using chicken breasts, which can tend to dry out, but you can use it if you like, of course. For another flavorful chicken dish, consider these delicious air-fried garlic parmesan chicken wings. Now the chicken marinade is going to get really thick and sticky in the oven, so this is really going to help with the cleanup.
Serving Suggestions
And this is your trust-use sauce. Use this as dipping sauce for your trust-use chicken later, or just drizzle this over the rice. My favorite way of eating trust-use chicken is with chicken rice. For another fantastic main course, try our easy baked salmon with garlic lemon glaze.
So give this sweet, sticky, savoury chicken a go. It’s so easy and takes no time to prepare if you don’t count the marinade in time. And yeah, try it. Bye.
Easy Char Siu Chicken Recipe with Sweet Sticky Marinade

An easy roasted Char Siu Chicken, marinated to savoury, sweet, sticky perfection. This oven-roasted chicken recipe uses boneless chicken legs or thighs for juicy results every time, with minimal active preparation time.
- 1 tbsp light soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp dark soy sauce (or kiccha maymes/sweet soy sauce)
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
- 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
- 1 tbsp blended ginger and garlic paste (from about 2 cloves garlic and 1 inch ginger)
- Red food coloring (totally optional)
- 300 grams boneless chicken legs (or chicken thighs)
- **Prepare the Marinade:** In a bowl or a ziploc bag, combine the light soy sauce, oyster sauce, dark soy sauce (or sweet soy sauce), honey, and brown sugar. Mix well.
- Add the Chinese five spice powder, white pepper, and the blended ginger and garlic paste. Mix until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
- Optionally, add a few drops of red food coloring if you desire the characteristic attractive red color of store-bought Char Siu. Note: The author usually skips this step.
- **Marinate Chicken:** Add the 300 grams of boneless chicken legs (or thighs) to the marinade. Ensure the chicken is completely submerged and well-coated by massaging the marinade into the chicken.
- Cover the bowl or seal the bag and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. For the best flavor and tenderness, marinate overnight.
- **Preheat Oven & Prepare Pan:** When ready to cook, preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius (392°F). Line a baking pan with aluminum foil. This step is highly recommended to ease cleanup, as the marinade becomes very thick and sticky during roasting.
- **Roast Chicken:** Place the marinated chicken on the prepared baking pan. Roast in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes.
- **Prepare Char Siu Sauce:** While the chicken is roasting, pour any leftover marinade from the bowl/bag into a small saucepan. Heat it over low heat, stirring occasionally, until it becomes nice and bubbly and thick, forming a sticky sauce.
- **Serve:** After 15-20 minutes, remove the Char Siu chicken from the oven. Serve immediately with the prepared sticky sauce as a dipping sauce or drizzled over rice. It pairs excellently with chicken rice.
