How to Make Ice Cream with Ingredients You Probably Already Have

Hi, I’m Gaby and today I’m going to show you how to make ice cream using ingredients you probably already have at home. It only takes five minutes, not a whole lot of stuff, and it’s really super easy. And you get homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker. How great is that? So let’s start.
Ingredients

For the Ice Cream Mixture
- ○ 1 cup whole milk (You can use like one percent or two percent, but you’ll get a lot of ice crystals. So it’s really, I mean, if you’re going to eat ice cream, you just eat the fat, right?)
- ○ 1 cup cream (because like I said, you want the fat like ice cream. It’s in the name cream, right?)
- ○ 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ○ a half cup of sugar
For the Ice Bath
- ○ 1 large resealable plastic bag
- ○ 1 smaller resealable plastic bag (I recommend using a bag that has a zipper)
- ○ ice
- ○ a half cup of rock salt (Now you don’t need rock salt. You can actually just use any kind of salt, but the salt is important, so you want to make sure you have it. This is what’s going to help bring the temperature down.)
- ○ a towel
Instructions
- Take everything for the ice cream mixture and mix it together. You want the sugar to be completely dissolved. For another simple dessert, consider an easy three-ingredient no machine ice cream recipe.
- Transfer our ice cream mixture to a plastic bag. I recommend using a bowl to pour mixture into this smaller bag. Now we’re just going to seal that up. We’re going to add some of the air.

- Next, we’re going to create our ice cream machine, which is pretty much this plastic bag filled with ice. So just go ahead and add in a few ice cubes to the large plastic bag to get it started.
- Then we’re going to add a half cup of rock salt to the large bag.
- Go ahead and take the smaller bag with the ice cream mixture and put it inside your ice cream maker, which is just another plastic bag (the large one).
- From there, we’re going to add in the remaining ice to the large bag, trying to cover it on both sides.
- I recommend wrapping this in its towel because it gets cold because it’s ice cream. So take the bag, wrap it up.
- Then we’re going to shake the heck out of it for about five minutes or so. You can do it less if you want it to be more like soft serve, or you can do it more. If you’re looking for another refreshing frozen treat, consider trying a homemade raspberry sorbet without an ice cream machine. It’s up to you.
- Okay, so we shook that for five minutes and now we’re going to remove our bag of ice cream. As you can see, it’s a lot firmer than it was when I put it in there. Inside we have our makeshift ice cream. So I’m going to scoop out.

Learn how to make delicious homemade ice cream using just a few common ingredients and a simple shaking method. This recipe requires no special equipment, just a couple of plastic bags, ice, and salt, resulting in creamy ice cream in about five minutes of active shaking.
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup cream (heavy cream or whipping cream recommended)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 large resealable plastic bag (gallon size recommended)

- Begin creating your ‘ice cream machine’ by adding a few ice cubes to the large resealable plastic bag.
- Add 1/2 cup of rock salt (or any salt) to the large bag with the ice.
- Place the sealed smaller bag containing the ice cream mixture inside the large bag.
- Add the remaining ice to the large bag, ensuring the smaller bag is surrounded and covered on all sides by ice.
- Seal the large plastic bag securely, again pressing out any excess air.
- Wrap the large bag in a towel to protect your hands from the cold.
- Shake the bag vigorously for about five minutes. Shake less for a soft-serve consistency, or longer for a firmer ice cream.
